Land Conflict to be Let-Up

Sumatera, Indonesia
Until the latest 2012, a number of land conflicts are getting and it has apparently not got the government’s attentions of Indonesia. In 2011, Agrarian Consortium found 69.975 spouses were in such conflict in Indonesia. They were disputing for the 476.048 hectare land.

This sort of conflict between the local residents, the stakeholders, and consensual agreement is creating insecure circumstances in Rawa Tripa, one of suburbs in Aceh. The countryside is now in rapid descent caused by the fast growing palm plantations in Nagan Raya and . The area is being managed by the stakeholders of the plantations

The residents of the 7 villages disapprove of the palm plantations that they doubt as illegitimate sabotage on their land. This conflict has been ongoing since 1990 until date.

The let-up that continuously happens has caused destructions in Rawa Tripa and extinction of conserved animals such as Sumatera Orangutan (Pongo Abelii), Sumatera Tiger (Panthera Tigris Sumantraensis), Bear (Helarctos Malayanus), Swamp Crocodile (Crocodylus Porosus), Python (Sanca), Wau-Wau and Kedih.

The same conflict has also taken place around Sungai Mencirim, Kutalimbaru sub-district, North Sumatera. At times it provokes the local residents and the private company, PT. Perkebunan Nusantara II. When the conflict took place both sides brought and set a truck on fire. The last conflict occurred in May, 5 burned truck incidents and 17 injured.

This conflict in Kutalimbaru has been ongoing since 1980’s. As a matter of fact, Susilo bambang Yudhoyono declared the land tenure that the land should be taken over by the local residents. But the responsible department has still not shown any significant action.

The worst conflict took place in Mesuji, South Sumatera. The incident cost lives. However, this conflict remains ongoing.

30 people died in the tragedy of Mesuji since 1999. The conflict between the local residents and the stakeholders apparently shows that the government might have to hand over the 10.500 Hectare land on 45th section to the residents of Lampung because it is land of legacy.

The 3 companies located on the 45th section are PT. Silva Inhitani that is located on the 45th section, Mesuji-Lampung district, PT. Barat Selatan Makmur Investindo in Desa Sri Tanjung, Lamoung and PT. Sumber Wangi Alam in Desa Sodong, Mesuji, Ogan Komering Ilir.

If this conflict is not solved, there will more people that die in vain. The responsible department should pay more attention to such conflict. Based on the track record of North  Sumatera Police Department there have been 2.833 conflicts in North Sumatera from 2005 – 2011.

The government should not just sit back and watch the conflict. The responsible department should find back up plans at once to settle this kind of conflict that might take place at any time.

If the government keeps coming up with the let-up, this conflict could be a time bomb that explodes at anytime. And it will turn out to be political and social chaos in place. The president should direct all related sectors to settle it.

With the increase of land conflicts, it unexpectedly appears to be human right ignorance. If the government is not following it up, then the nation is guilty for human.
